How does hypnosis work to alleviate insomnia? Wendy Merron, C.Ht. is a talented hypnotherapist who offers her services in Pennsylvania and through her website. She has taken some time to provide insight into how hypnosis can help you overcome insomnia.
Hypnosis to Overcome Insomnia
Hypnosis can be a very effective treatment for insomnia. The process is naturally relaxing and it can help insomniacs to use their mental processes to lull them to sleep. If you have ever had restless nights, you are well aware that your mind is far too active for you to drift off to sleep. This is because you are unable to transition between the active, beta state to the calmer alpha state of mind. Hypnosis can help you achieve this transition.
When you are lying awake in bed with thoughts racing through your head, your mind is in the beta state. In order to fall asleep, the brain needs to transition into the alpha state, in which it is aware, but very relaxed. This leads to the theta state and the five stages of sleep.
Interview With Wendy Merron, a Certified Hypnotist
Wendy has helped many people address an array of obstacles, including insomnia and restlessness.
What inspired you to enter the field of hypnosis?
When I was in my early twenties, I took a course entitled Silva Mind Control. (Of course, they don't call it by this name today.) I learned the power of visualization, imagination and belief among other things.
Fast forward and years later, I found out that what I really learned was self hypnosis! I was one of many people who had no idea that hypnosis was beneficial. All I knew was what I learned when I saw a hypnosis show for entertainment.
Can anyone hypnotize himself?
Absolutely. In fact, hypnosis is a totally natural state that we go in and out of daily. It is similar to a meditative state. Rather than clearing our minds, we are using our minds for helpful changes.
What are the different levels of consciousness?
Good question. Different levels of hypnosis are used for different things. For example, if you are going to have surgery and want to avoid anesthesia, you would want to condition yourself to go easily into a very deep level of hypnosis.
Light levels of hypnosis are all that is needed for smoking cessation, weight loss, and yes, insomnia.
What role does imagination play in hypnosis?
Imagination plays a key role in hypnosis. Research has shown that there is a part of our imagination that does not know the difference between fantasy and reality. We can intentionally use our imagination at a deep level and access our subconscious minds for positive change.Luckily, people don't have to be good at visualization to have a good imagination!
How does hypnosis work to relieve insomnia?
I teach my clients how to use their imagination and create a scenario where they can create the space to quiet their mind so they can go to sleep easily and effortlessly.
How long have people been using this approach?
People have been using hypnosis for thousands of years. As far back as 2000 BC there were sleep temples in Egypt that were used for healing.
What can people expect from the process?
They can expect a positive experience where they learn how to use the power of their imagination to go to sleep easily.
Have you ever had problems with insomnia?
Yes. There have been times in my life when falling to sleep was a challenge. I've used this technique myself and it works beautifully. In addition, eating the right foods and keeping my body nutritionally sound is a good idea too.
What products are available for people who want to try this approach?
MP3 downloads, CDs, and seeing a hypnotist in person are beneficial.
Hypnosis for Insomnia
"How does hypnosis work with other interventions?" is a pressing question for many people. While hypnosis is no cure-all, it can be a wonderful natural sleep aid that serves as a complement to nearly any intervention you choose. It is critical that you visit your physician in order to determine if there is a medical condition causing your insomnia.
Self-hypnosis and hypnotherapy can augment medical interventions. Many people find that they are better able to adopt a nightly routine that is conducive to good sleep hygiene as well as a good night's rest.
